6 Considerations for Designing the Perfect Business Card

1. Size and Shape

The first thing you need to consider when designing a brand new business card is its size and shape. It needs to be small enough so that it will easily fit inside a wallet, yet large enough so that the print is legible. Most business cards will be about the same size as a credit card, approximately three and a half by two inches.

The shape of the card is another important consideration. As printing technology continues to improve, many customizable options are emerging. For example, die-cutting allows you to print out nearly any shape you desire in bulk.

2. Logo

After you’ve decided on the size and shape you would like for your business cards, you need to make sure you have a logo. There are four major types of logos:

  • Wordmarks
  • Brand marks
  • Combination marks
  • Emblems

The one you will select will depend on the look you’re going for. Keep in mind, the purpose of a logo is to achieve brand recognition. The best logos feature simple designs that allow the viewer to clearly identify the brand. For example, just think of Nike’s storied checkmark or the famous golden arches of McDonald’s.

3. Text

The proper text is another important element to include on your business card. In general, your text should be informative. You’ll want to explain to people what you do and how they can get in touch with you. This means including a phone number, email address, social media handles, website, or any other important information.

If you have the space for it, consider including a short tagline or brand slogan. This is usually a few words that explains to people how your products and sevices can help them. For example, here’s a tagline that might appear on a graphic designer’s business card:

“Providing stunning design services since 2004”

4. Layout

Next, you need to decide how your text and logo will appear on the card. What is the first thing you want people to see? What is the last thing you want people to see? Will your card have an abstract layout or one that’s more conventional?

These are all important questions to think about when designing the layout of your business card.

5. Custom Finishes

Chances are, the people you give your business cards to also receive dozens of cards from other professionals. That’s why it’s important that your card is unique. In order to achieve this effect, you might want to use a custom finish.

Custom finishes like embossing or letter pressing allow you to add a different texture to your card. Or, if you’d like to add a little bit of pizazz to your card, you might want to consider 3D foil stamping to give it a shine that’s one-of-a-kind!

6. Print Provider

Finally, you need to make sure the print provider you select to implement your design and print your business cards is reliable. In order to do so, ask them to show you some of their previous work. If you like it, you will probably be safe to trust them to get the job done right. If you don’t, you should keep searching for a different print provider.

After all, the last thing you want is to order hundreds – or even thousands – of business cards, only for them to not match your expectations.
